Poem 131
The indivisible bitter and sweet of love … in Biology I was taught the difference between voluntary and involuntary muscles and was struck by the fact that we have no control over our heart …
( I like the fat man’s dreams of glory, the stroking grasp and the ambiguity of the last image – driving into the sunrise is always positive, into the sea not so much … )
Reckless
The heart is an involuntary muscle
so we clench love to ourselves
like a fat man his dreams
of glory
if the phone rings
love horrifies us with its nearness
its stroking grasp
the heart
chooses its jump and jumps
refuses to stop for misery but flashing
its lights honking its horn
drives
straight into the sunrise
and the sea
