Poem 160

From the dogs back to the cats …  a typewriter poem from 1983 and once again from the Dixon Street steps (see Poem 61) …

( key difference here between light singular in the first stanza and lights plural in the last … )

Silhouette

That small cat whose head fitted my hand
ran part way down the stairs with me
Friday evening coming home from work
she meant to go a few steps further
but paused forgetting me
                                              to smell something strange
I looked back to see a still photo
the empty street and cat against the light
on the broken stairs

she was a dirty fur in the gutter this morning

I see her against the lights
meaning to run on a few steps
but scenting something strange …
