Poem 206

slackly through heaven … for an unbeliever I seemed to write a lot about God and religion … compared to Poem 194 this is kind of God’s side of the story and paints a picture similar to the song (What if God was) One of Us that came out a decade or so later …

… I can also join the dots between this and Poem 24 and Poem 187 …

… the tone of exhausted cynicism and held back emotion is belied by the tears of the title …

Can’t See For Tears

God is breaking down again
drowning in dead children
while parents decide he must have wanted Luke
to seed the clouds
sing in his angel choir
                                       (though
           neither of their families
           is musical)
                               God
pokes at this one dead child
like a starfish
and wishes they wouldn't always
fetch up on his jandals
who's got no one to blame
            nothing to look up to
            and let go his choir
long since

beachcomber God who can't see to count
how many sparrows are falling
          across the world
shuffles on …

                                all day
                                the tide rolls the boy
                                slackly through heaven
