Poem 328

( I like the noise like a flock of ducks which perfectly describes the sound … )

Before The Argument

We were leaning against the old
shallow fountain
I had never seen working
you asked the time
and it was two minutes to seven
only just dark
both of us having somehow missed
the exact moment when the light went
then
          at seven o'clock
behind us there was suddenly a noise
like a flock of ducks landing and skidding
across the water
startled
               we both ran three steps
and turned around
and the fountain was playing
lights colouring the water
deep red
then blue like a giant
                                            safe firework
sprays rising and falling
changing pattern
drifts of mist
spreading out and across
the grass

it's only
I can't help thinking
the evening
should have ended there
