Poem 372

Take the hint, sunshine – you’re surplus to requirements … I like the shape of this and its slight maladroitness that gives it a different rhythm and a certain charm I think …

( I enjoy the repetition of simple words and the rhymes, including the less obvious … maybe/way, direction/must have run, lover/wonder/over … )

Reading The Signs

I lost my love in the rain
maybe she took another way
if I followed
in the right direction
all I can say
is she must have run

my love walked into the rain
or perhaps she ran
it's all the same
with a lover on the lam
a moon like a sprain

I stopped
began to wonder
was the beginning over
was it over
before it began

my love walks in the night
her head is full of fears
the city foggy and bright
safe inside the rain
she loves and needs no light
no broken-lamped affair
that gutters in her sight
