Poem 214

Maybe the reason I fall asleep so easily is that I don’t care whether I do or not, indifference the best invocation …

… this owes something to Joni Mitchell’s Car On The Hill

Staring In The Dark

You are an illiterate sleeper
while the book falls open for me
easily
          and I read it well

sleep is my friend
sitting down with me
      at my desk
in the afternoon reading
over my shoulder
the blank page

your mistake
was to take him as a lover
and now lie listening
too hard
for the sound of his car

Staring In The Dark
